Caps, crowns and bridges
A crown (cap) covers a weak or broken tooth to make it strong again. A bridge fills a gap by joining a false tooth to the teeth on either side.
- How long does it take?
- 2 visits, about a week apart
- Does it hurt?
- Numbed while the tooth is shaped
- What about recovery?
- Eat normally once the final crown is fixed
You might need this if
- A tooth that is cracked, worn down or has a large filling
- A tooth that has had a root canal
- A gap left by a missing tooth

What happens, step by step
- 1
Numbing
The tooth is numbed so shaping is comfortable.
- 2
Shape the tooth
The tooth is trimmed so the crown can fit over it.
- 3
Measure
We take a mould or scan and send it to the lab.
- 4
Fit the crown
You wear a temporary cap, then the final crown is fixed at the next visit.
After your treatment
Every mouth is different, so your dentist will give you advice for your own case.
- Avoid sticky or hard food on the temporary cap
- Floss under a bridge with a floss threader
- Keep up check-ups so the edges stay healthy
